REFLECTION

Experience

Writing this somehow brings back memories from my Typography module because I have no other way to describe this entire experience other than a roller-coaster ride. It has been extremely taxing, but rewarding (in certain instances). But if there is one thing that I have learnt its that there has to be a balance when it comes to doing the works as well as getting equal rest.

In the beginning of the module, things were kind of fun and easy, as we had just started the classes completely online, and the sessions were still not that to bear. But, as it got more towards the end of the semester, it was very close to becoming unbearable, though I can't imagine how it would've been for the lecturers themselves. Midway through the semester I had begun falling terribly ill and it all started going downhill from there.

Observation
I've observed that, I am discovering more of myself or trait of myself -in terms of work-.ethics that I may be totally on the move, in the groove very much motivated, but then .... I may get demotivated and sort of find not much momentum to keep it going. I began to notice a certain amount of pressure or fear of disappointing my lecturers. And given that I was rather ill, it began to have a detrimental effect to my overall health. I was afraid of failing. I think I still am and I feel that it something I definitely need to cross. I have to accept that failure is very normal and it is unfair to expect perfectionism(though I am very positive I am far from it) from myself all the time. Failure is a part of the growth process especially in the field that I am in.

But, towards the end of the semester, I feel I did improve in that sense, maybe a little too much. One other thing, that I noticed is that the community you surround yourself with is very important for your growth be it in any field. I am lucky to have lecturers and friends that are supportive and understanding more so during this tough period.

Findings

In terms of design, here is what I have discovered:

1) My primary resource for finding inspiration has most often been Pinterest. But I discovered a better tool. Instagram! I had previously not bothered about Instagram as I found it difficult to find the exact type of inspiration that I was looking for considering the fact that it wasn't exactly an information based social media as opposed to google or Pinterest.

But with the use of hashtags, I was able to fine-tune and narrow down my search and honestly found much more professional examples from experts in the industry. That is the standard that I should aspire for.

2) Brand Identity Systems seems very intriguing and exciting to me. It may be something that I want to pursue in the future for my career. But I definitely do need to work on my animating skills as I am super weak on it.

3) One rather interesting incident that happened during the entire module is that I found some of my classmates drawing inspiration from artists a little too much, and with much reflection and also reading many articles on this matter, I have found a way to overcome this accident.

"Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal".

A quick google search, and you'll find the author of this quote to be Steve Jobs who had actually misquoted Pablo Picasso who in reality said, “Lesser artists borrow; great artists steal”. We think it ends there, but actually it is said that Picasso might be rephrasing Igor Stravinsky who derived it from the original dictum by T.S Eliot :

"“Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn.”

The origins of this quote is probably a good example of great artists stealing. And it makes a whole lotta sense cause only a great designer would make something that is already good even better. And if we're having the audacity to "steal" ideas, we ought to have make it better.

In my humble opinion, I think originality may be slightly overrated in the sense that, many great inventions have actually just been built upon something that has already done. To overcome stealing ideas wholly, as a student I think, drawing inspiration from many sources, or maybe "stealing" elements from many different sources and categories, forming an entirely new artwork is much better than "stealing ideas" from just one source. Almost like a collage of ideas.

4) After much reflection and ruminating the words of y lecturers, as a student we should never think that we have done the best in a certain endeavour, as this halts all possibility of learning. Staying humble and continuously working on it, will not only grow our knowledge in that particular endeavour but also teach us to stretch one idea to the ends and squeeze out ever possibility out.

All in all, I really want to thank Mr. Vinod, Mr. Shamsul and all of my friends for making this learning experience..... well exactly that, a learning experience. And the lecturers tireless efforts to illumine us with their vast experience and knowledge in their field. Their commitment to educating us is truly very much appreciated. And to my fellow friends, this might be our last semester together, but it was a hellish blast.
